Exactly. I don't think they are made of pure energy (like the"Power" rings.) I think they are actual machines of some sort.
Speaking of which, Rings are one of the least understood things in Sonic cannon. I mean the ones used for health. They seem to be everywhere, but there's no explanation for it. I'd personally subscribe to the theory that they are pure energy, but they seem to be solid enough for Casinos to give they away as prizes. Hell, the Circus level in Shadow the Hedgehog is apparently made of them.

And they also seem to be solid enough to serve as a currency... My best guess is that they simply follow one of those "Gameplay =/= Cannon" rules.
Also, not to nag, but you never answered my other question, Quacker.

They are called inhibitor rings and they control the Chaos Force his support system is fueled by.
He removes them at the end of Sonic Next and goes on a Mephiles raping spree. Also in a recent issue of the comic he removes them to fight Enerjak. Specifically saying, "Everyone stand back I am removing my inhibitor rings and tapping fully into the Chaos Force."

Hasnt anyone noticed that when he takes them off massive ass-kicking occurs? It's kind of like in Kill Bill vol 1 and 2. When Kiddo is about to kill some punk, you hear that high pitched whistle. It's Shadow's calling card, so to speak. The rings come off; someone DIES.

Yep. Basically, when he takes them off, he's like 'GET OUT OF MY WAY OR DIE, BIATCH! D<'

Doesn't he kill all those Shadow-wannabe-clones-clones in Sonic '06? ... Why didn't he just oblitherate Mephilis on their first meeting?

Well, the ability to do that much asswhiping probably comes at a price. IE, look at the final fight in SA2. He plumpted to earth cause he ran out of energy. There's probably some trade off that makes him hold off on doing it until abolsutely nessasary.

Why didn't he just oblitherate Mephilis on their first meeting? Because then we wouldnt have a story.

From what I understand, there wasn't a story to begin with.

Unless your ears were plugged up by wax or you didn't play the game, there was a story. Whether or not it was any good is another question.

How come shadow didn't realease a severe beating on the Meterax on Sonic X? Remember, Chris had one of Shadow's rings as a keepsake to remember him by.
So when Shadow reappeared again in that one episode when they were on that planet with the shifting castle, where was the collateral? He even had two Chaos Emeralds with him!
