how exactly did everyone first come across the sonic universe? through playing sonic 1 when they were little, or satam? im not sure if this belongs in this section, but people will move it if its not.
i first played sonic 1 on my friends megadrive when i was around five, however we weren't able to beat it completely.later i came across other media, such as the cartoons and comics, through the years i found the newer games and have been enjoying them ever since.
to others, feel free to post your first experiences with the blue blur.

Bought Sonic Adventure Dee Ecks when I was 10. I loved it. First Sonic game I played, too. Over the years I bought some other games and found Mega Collection and Gems Collection.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is by far my favorite Sonic game.

I heard someone talk about a Sonic game on their NeoGeo and I heard the names "Sonic" and "Knuckles"
First time I actually saw anything sonic-related was when I was 9, one of my friends got Sonic Advance 1 and let me play, and I was like "Who are these people? I know Sonic and that's it".

I first got into Sonic when I was 11. I visited my Cousin who had a Genesis, and dug into his new game library. While Moon Walker and Altered beast were OK, Sonic blew me away. He has a speed and attitude not found in my usual games, and I thought the graphics were incredibly striking (remember, I was still playing NES at this time).
I got my own Genesis and Game Gear, and hungrily consumed all of the Sonic games and comics until Sonic 3D blast. It was about that time that I realized the series was going down hill, and bailed. I didn't get a 32X, or the Saturn. I did play Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, but while I had fun, it wasn't enough to get me back into the franchise.
Then Sonic Adventure 2 two came out, and I was blown away. I was aware Shadow was a horribly cliche character, and the tone of the game was inconsistent with the rest of the franchise, but for some reason I loved it. Remember, I was a college student now, so I totally loved the new Government Conspiracy plotlines, and the tragic love story of Maria and Shadow. I thought Rouge was hilariously inappropriate for the series, and loved playing the speed based gameplay. I started the Church of Shadow the Hedgehog as a joke, since he was so out of character for a Sonic game, but as time went on (the the series evolved) I realized that I was hooked once again.
I can now say that the franchise is just something I love, despite it's many obvious short comings, and not just because of Shadow. I actually LIKE Cream the Rabbit. I excitedly called my wife over when Jet the Hawk made a cameo in Sonic and Mario at the Winter Olympics. It's like the Sonic universe is one big, mildly dysfunctional family, and I am a sucker for their reunions.

I actually had an introduction to Archie and Underground before the games at age 6; mainly because it was when my brother took a short jog through the fandom. I still have a few children books of the Archie series, which I can recall the plot of off the top of my head but I won't bore you with that.
My first introduction to the games themselves was Adventure 1. More to the point, the demo disk. After that, I pestered my parents until they got the fully game for me to play. And I played the hell out of it. It took me forever to beat it, not to mention the fact that I had a jittery thing where I'd get jumpy while playing. I actually still have that while playing plat-formers, which I don't get at all.
